Offering Sobriety and Hope to Tarrant County Homeless Veterans
Background and History of Liberty House
There is a critical shortage of residential, substance abuse, and family supportive services for Tarrant County veterans. To address this need, MHMR of Tarrant County-Addiction Services has partnered with the United States Veterans Administration and opened Liberty House.
Liberty House is a transitional housing program that offers veterans the opportunity to live and work in a safe and drug free environment while practicing their recovery skills. MHMR of Tarrant County has a staff of trained professionals who are experienced in helping people overcome the problems associated with mental illness and addictive behaviors.

Funding
MHMR of Tarrant County Addiction Services Division received a capital grant award from the Veterans Administration totaling $600,000 and has matched the VA grant with an additional $300,000 to renovate and expand an existing facility into a transitional housing center.
The VA grant and matching funds from MHMR of Tarrant County covered construction costs - bricks and mortar - only. The grant did not pay for essential items such as mattresses, sheets, window coverings, sofas, chairs, or even a refrigerator.
Community support made it possible for Liberty House to open its doors in March of 2010.
